Muhammad Meki

Muhammad Meki is an Associate Professor in the Department of International Development and an Associate Member of the Department of Economics, University of Oxford. He is an Affiliate of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), CESifo, the Centre for the Study of African Economies (CSAE), and Pembroke College, Oxford. He is a fellow of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, where he serves as the Investment Bursar, overseeing the management of the endowment fund.

He completed his PhD in the Department of Economics, University of Oxford, followed by a postdoctoral research fellowship until 2020. He previously completed postgraduate degrees in finance (LSE), economics (Cambridge), and development economics (Oxford).

His work lies at the intersection of development economics and finance, focusing on addressing challenges faced by small firms in developing countries. In his current research, he is particularly interested in the effects of equity-like financial contracts—such as shared ownership of assets or income sharing—on the investment and growth of small firms. He has conducted fieldwork in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Kenya, and Pakistan.

Prior to academia, he worked for five years as a trader in the financial markets for Bank of America in London and Deutsche Bank in Singapore, where he traded European and Asian government bonds, foreign exchange derivatives, and other fixed-income products.
