Gabriela Smarrelli

Gabriela Smarrelli is a PhD Candidate at the Department of International Development at the University of Oxford. Within the University, she is also a member of the Centre for the Study of African Economies (CSAE). She is an applied microeconomist and her research sits at the intersection of development economics, economics of education, and public administration. Her research studies the barriers to human capital formation, particularly those imposed by the prevalence of violence and restrictive social norms. She also explores the role of incentives and non-pecuniary sources of motivation on bureaucrats’ performance. Gabriela holds an MPA from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a BSc in Economics from Universidad del Pacifico.
