In this VoxDevTalk, Allan Hsiao outlines his research in Indonesia looking at how the allocation of public investment in healthcare infrastructure was affected by the period of democratisation after the fall of Suharto. Results in this setting reveal that democracy decreases the misallocation of investment in healthcare infrastructure, and this work yields important lessons for countries around the world transitioning out of ‘strong-man’ political regimes.
