

James Allen IV
Associate Research Fellow, International Food Policy Research Institute
James Allen IV is an Associate Research Fellow in the Poverty, Gender, and Inclusion Unit at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). His research aims to improve poverty, health and education in Africa by studying policies and interventions via randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and natural experiments. He received a PhD in Economics & Public Policy from the University of Michigan (2023) and a MS degree in Agricultural, Food & Resource Economics from Michigan State University (2012). He served in the United States Peace Corps in Mali (2010-2012) and has additional field experience in Egypt, Rwanda, and Mozambique.

Community health programmes and HIV/AIDS outcomes in Mozambique
A widely implemented HIV/AIDS programme inadvertently decreased HIV testing by worsening misinformation and HIV-related stigmatising attitudes, but a simple follow-up intervention offset the programme’s adverse effects.
