

Arlete Mahumane
Scientific Director, Beira Operational Research Center
Arlete Mahumane is the Scientific Director of the Beira Operational Research Center (CIOB), which facilitates health research and enhances the research capabilities of institutions throughout central Mozambique. Arlete also collaborates on research initiatives, providing in-country expertise regarding Mozambican conditions, cultural norms, and health care guidelines. She is a practicing clinician and currently cares for patients with HIV/AIDS. She holds an MD from the Catholic University of Mozambique and an MPH in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh.

Community health programmes and HIV/AIDS outcomes in Mozambique
A widely implemented HIV/AIDS programme inadvertently decreased HIV testing by worsening misinformation and HIV-related stigmatising attitudes, but a simple follow-up intervention offset the programme’s adverse effects.
