What are labour markets, how do labour markets work, and what are the barriers to search and hiring in low and lower-middle income country labour markets? This VoxDevLit outlines evidence from research on labour markets in developing countries.
Every year, hundreds of millions of people around the world search for a job, while millions of firms look for new recruits. This VoxDevLit explores urban labour markets in developing countries, first documenting the labour market barriers faced by jobseekers and firms before evaluating the impacts of a wide set of interventions designed to address these barriers. Evidence is presented on workers' skills, search costs, jobseekers' beliefs, and the psychological cost of search within this literature review.
