Richard Matzopoulos
Director, South African Medical Research Council’s Burden of Disease Research Unit
Richard Matzopoulos is the Director of the South African Medical Research Council’s Burden of Disease Research Unit. He also coordinates the Violence and Injury Research Programme at the University of Cape Town’s Division of Public Health Medicine, where he holds the position of Honorary Professor and serves on the interim Steering Committee of the Health Sciences Faculty’s Trauma Advocacy Group. His research centers on measuring the health and social burden of violence and injury and evaluating interventions and policies that target upstream determinants. He advises provincial and national governments on alcohol harm reduction, as well as interpersonal violence and injury prevention and surveillance. He is a Steering Committee Member of the International Collaborative Effort on Injury Statistics and Methods and a member of the Editorial Board for Injury Prevention.
